Can you use dog droppings to fertilize your garden?

I read somewhere once that in some countries, because of the crowded conditions, some people scoop up dog droppings to use in their gardens. Is this ok to do? Should the droppings be first mixed into a compost heap and allowed to breakdown? Can you use dog droppings to fertilize your garden?
IF you will go read the info in the link provided by the poster above, the very last paragraph says it all...

';The health hazards associated with cat and dog manure are greater than the potential benefit from its fertilizer value. Cat and dog manure should be disposed of by flushing down the toilet, burying deep in the soil (six inches or more) or by placement in tight plastic bags for garbage collection. ';

NO!!!.....not good... don't do it.....Can you use dog droppings to fertilize your garden?
It is a good question. After all, farmers use cow and pig manure. Best to check with your local university agricultural extension office - every state has one.

I would caution against using it on root bearing plants such as carrots, potatoes, beets, etc. until you find out more info. However, all other types of veggies should be fine as their roots filter the nutrients.

There is a good article with pros and cons from my hometown university's agricultural website (middle of the page under title 'Fertilizer Value':

Good Luck.
You want to avoid dog droppings. The best form of droppings to use as fertilizer comes from vegetarian animals like horses and cows.

Dog droppings need to be composted at high temperatures to make them safe. It is unlikely that you will be able to do this in a garden compost heap.
Compost them first. And there might also be a problem with intestinal parasites, which can crawl up the stems of plants and can be eaten. Compost for at least a year. Or get bags of organic compost and use that. It's already been sterilized.
Meat should never be used in a compost pile and on plants. Exception is fish. Read any dog food ingredients and meat will be at the top. Will it kill the plants probably not , will it be benificial to them - probably not.
No cat or dog or human waste is wanted for compost in your garden, there is too big of a chance of worms etc. Stick with horse, cow, chicken or rabbit
You can bury the droppings in the soil but it will take some time to decompose. Make sure it's deep or it will smell.
If you can over come the gag reflex before it is rotted down I suppose, but I personally wouldn't feed it to my leeks, even after rotting process.
NO NEVER.!! but ';I'; do it all the time. It's tough to tell the difference around here between fox scat and dog doo?? RScott
No. Only use droppings from animals that eat plants.
No! You might get sick.
i wouldn't use them directly..they could burn the plants...compost would probably be best
yeah my neighbor just puts it in her compost heap and it just mixes in....
no only from cows or horses
yeah if course it will work
