These Grackles are getting the best of me. Our deck is built around a birch tree which seems to be a very popular hang out for Greckles. In addition to just hanging out there, they seem to be engaged in an ongoing competition to see who can make the biggest mess of our deck. I'm also quite certain that they laugh after watching our two dogs walk accross the poo covered deck to do their own duties. Does anyone have any tips that might help get rid of these feathered jokesters? I am very concerned not only about the condition of the deck but also with the dogs tracking Grackle droppings in the house. How can I get rid of the Grackles that are destroying my deck with their droppings?
Grackles are a protected species. You cannot shoot them as someone suggested.
Your best bet is to mount something noisy just outside the door. A big triangle works for us for scaring off the crows and starlings. Everytime the birds start massing, ring or shake the heck out of the noise maker.
If Black Cats are legal in your area. You could walk just outside your door, light one, and pitch it out into the yard. That may drive your dogs nuts though. Also, I hope you're in a rural area, if you're in the 'burbs and letting fireworks fly, your neighbors will give you the evil eye.
Birds are pretty smart and won't stick around where they are constantly disturbed. They may try to mass on occasion but we now only have stand up to glass door and they scatter.
We had a neighbor that thought he could get rid of the crows by cutting down their roosting tree -- a beautiful cottonwood. They just moved to the trees in the front of his yard. Stooge.

stick bits of glass in a bottle and hang it from the tree or wind chimes.
if you are in the country i would suggest getting a BB gun or a pellet gun and shoot them, or if you don't want to kill them you can try to get them with a hose or a squirt gun.
