I recently moved into a new apartment in Manhattan. This week, when I went to clean the kitchen, I discovered that underneath and inside the stove is COVERED with mouse droppings. I was able to clean underneath myself, but I don't think I will be able to get everything out of the inside of the stove as it is old and rusted. Is the landlord obligated to either have the stove cleaned professionally, or replace it?The stove in my new apartment is filled with mouse droppings, what is the landlord's obligation?
Definitely! If the appliance is provided with the apartment then they have to provide it in a manner that you can actually use. If nothing else, at least ask the landlord. They're required by law to answer your questions! When I moved into an apartment 10 years ago, the carpets were all dirty and my parents were able to get the landowner to actually replace the carpets even though they could have just cleaned them. Also, when I moved into my new apartment this year they replaced one of the eyelets that wasn't working properly on my range. But the capper on all this is that a previous tenant had installed a third towel rack in the bathroom (not against the rules but not the landlord's responsibility) which was broken when I moved in, and the landlord even agreed to fix THAT for me. In conclusion, I have no doubt if you bring up the issue with your landlord that it will be ignored. The stove in my new apartment is filled with mouse droppings, what is the landlord's obligation?
i don't think he'll replace it but he NEEDS to have it cleaned professionally
i hope you haven't used it yet....
It is THEIR responsibility to provide you with a pest free home! They should take care of it with no problem. If not have it done professionally and submit it against your rent
I'd think so. If not have it done and subtract the cost from the rent.
